I was out this afternoon finding Between The River today and as I approached it from the west I found the footbridge underwater. I was tempted to walk through the knee deep water (read: soup) but I didn't. It was a reminder though that those cache's placed near waters edge are at risk this time of year.

I have been watching some of these and I am impressed, the owners have been on the bit and have been disabling them when necessary.

In the end I approached it from the other direction and got it.

Riverside Flood Blog ...
All those retrieved caches are really filling up our living room especially "Supersize It " Just to update all you wonderful people IF we still had that one in place you could still drive to it from 1 of the 3 access roads but water would be lapping gently all around you along the way. Several families will begin boating out to get their kids to school tomorrow in our neighbourhood but so far our bus still finds that one elusive back roads route in. Hydro lines nearby are in the river and falling over and hanging on for dear life. Apparently some dim truck driver sped through the water on the 75 highway over the Morris Bridge today and over the raised gravel barrier/dike into town - needless to say no one inside was impressed since it was technically closed. He claimed the barriers were moved slightly to the side. That is what the rumor mill tells us. Our friends home in St. Jean was featured on page A8 of the Free Press today. They have moved into St. Jean and than for the weekend are heading into Winnipeg. This is their first experience with a flood ever since they were from Jamaica and later Winnipeg. Pump sales are going well locally. Rubber boots are selling well also.

My 78 year old Mom (Not Joker Granny) who has survived the Floods of 48 (3 feet main floor), 66, 79 (basement flooded), 96 (almost) and 97 (4 feet on main floor) stocked up on her meds and says she will refuse to leave her home and is planning to sit on her front porch drinking coffee, cradling a pellet gun (to keep away those who wish to evacuate us), since her main floor is now is a good 4 feet above 1997 levels!

Our cistern (yes we still have one) is rising out of the ground slowly since the water pressure in the ground is forcing it upwards. We are hoping the pipes to it don't snap. Strange things happen when the ground water rises like this.

Walked into my sister Ramblin' Rose's house (the water is lapping gently at their driveway) and I noticed immediately she has her priorities right. On the table a small roll of duck tape, 5-6 caching containers well camoed, a large package of ziploc bags and the GPSr ready to go!!! Caching is a great stress-reliever. How would you guys like it if we posted a 1/2 dozen in Morris now and see if you'd find your way in eh? Canoe to an island maybe for some FTF's?

Water's up to the back of our dike again this year but we're ready for that island FTF if it stops raining for a day or so! Got the boat out last weekend and launched it off the back of the dike for a spin over the fields to make sure it's ship shape. Didn't know the pond behind us is normally 10 ft deep. It's 20ft now and rising. At least the water is slowing down. I think it's to peak over the Easter weekend and then it's only got to go down!

We've got a cistern too queen but it's not going anywhere. Our problem will be to keep it filled! How do you get someone to bring you a load of water when the only access is to move or go around barracades! My Geo-Kitchen cache is high and dry but no one can come find it for the same reason. Barricades.

Well in another week or two at the most, we'll be back some kind of normality (what ever that is for a cacher as we're usually nuts) and be back caching again!

I'll be dreaming of caching .... hmmmmmmm.
Wait why am I sleeping! I've got to run the pumps! MHz

Interesting flood related story. I was meandering home from Winkler (picking up a pump) driving through barricades and water over the road when I noticed someone taking photos. Thinking it was a relative of mine I stopped to chat. It was a fellow from the city who was heading to Grand Forks and detoured. Needless to say we discussed the best route to get there (who actually knows) when I noticed a GPSr on his seat. I looked at him and said, "Are you a geocacher?" to which he replied yes - Marvin. I knew him from Old Bat fame (relatives) and we swapped turns taking pics of each other out in the middle of a small gravel road barricaded by the ever deepening Morris/Red River! Just then he got a text message - ARE YOU LOST? To which he replied yes. Hopefully he can find his way to his girlfriends in Grand Forks!!! Very cool meeting a geocacher in the heart of our little tiny village of Riverside.
