when i bought my first computer two years ago,i watched a computer show on weekends,this show in particular was where i found out about geocaching,and hooked ever since,i thought i would share this to all ,you can view a family from b.c. as they hunt as a family to a cache hide, goto ( www.chalktv.com ) look for past shows 1.24, titled " recreational rules " ,there they will discuss gps's and geocaching. a great video stream for new cachers to check out.

im just a new one here just joined a few mins ago. well here's my welcome message for myself. i should tell u a bit about myself. i live in a lil town in south central manitoba, am a 15 yr old female and have loved geocaching ever since i got my first GPS when i was 13. i may be young and still learning alot of the "tricks of the trade" or whatever they call it. well if ne one has ne further questions don't be afraid to ask.

Hi guys (and gals!). Been at Geocaching.com since Thursday, July 13, 2006.

I now have 31 finds under my belt and 5 caches of my own hidden.

I stumbled onto this site while searching for geocaches in Manitoba.

Hi, my name is Migo. I'm a 24 year old guy from Winnipeg, interested mostly in architecture, photography, autocross, ice racing, and model rocketry.

I was fortunate to receive a modest Magellan eXplorist 400 for Christmas 2006, and yesterday I heard about geocaching from a different website.

It has only been 26 hours and 30 mins since then, but I've already combed through most of the geocaching.com website, and now here I am, seeking out folks in Winnipeg.

I haven't gone out to look for a cache yet, but from what GC tells me, there's one within 0.2mi of my house.

I'm looking forward to finding caches and perhaps hiding a couple of my own, since I love camping and hiking, and have always enjoyed treasure hunts. If any of you have tips/advice for searching through Winnipeg-specific caches, please don't hesitate to let me know... I know that we have some interesting weather and terrain in this locale. :)

Glad to see another new face. A few tips I can pass along are,
look for winter friendly caches to start with,
look for caches marked as small sized or larger, Micro's in winter are very difficult.
always mark your car as a waypoint to get you out after a hike into the woods.

Welcome to the world of Geocaching Migo! There's a cache for everyone and cache hiders will take you to places around Winnipeg and Manitoba that you never knew existed.

The easiest way to winter cache (especially when you're starting out) is to "track" someone else to the cache. Look for caches that have been found since the Dec 31 storm. Stay dry and bring a shovel :)

Thank you for the warm welcome, and quick response! I'm glad to see that this board is alive.

I'm probably going to hunt a couple of sites on the weekend.

So far I get the general impression that there are lots of geocachers in Winnipeg, and some who aren't even on this board. I saw a couple with their kid poking around the fringes of the park behind my house around a month ago, and I simply chalked it off to a missing pet... hmm...

How much of your free time do you guys devote to this? I normally go for walks and hikes every other day, so this seems like a great activity to go with it.

That all depends on who you ask. I have been known to forego sleep for geocaching on a few too many occasions.

The nice thing about the activity is that you can do it with any size group, and at any time of day.

I have an eXplorist 500 myself. If you need any guidance using yours, let me know. I'd be pleased to help.

Darn, I missed the pub crawl. I had dinner with my grandfather that evening anyway, but it would have been nice to meet you all.

My girlfriend (who will be signing up as 'd1983' soon) and I found our first 3 caches over the weekend. It was great fun, and I loved the way they were almost impossible to find unless you were looking for them intently. I would never have known that these caches were there, when I was a muggle. We did one in Lindenwoods and two down at St. Norbert, by the old Trappist monastery.

I have two questions...

1. I keep reading logs that refer to a Lizard... is this a person or a piece of equipment? I'm not sure what this means.

2. For Lizardo (and those with eXplorist GPSr's) - My geocache points used to work fine, but now they don't show up on the map unless I search for them using POI/Geocache Pts/filename and clicking "view". I checked my preferences and display options, and it should be working... kinda strange. Maybe I'll show you sometime.

Hello Migo and welcome to geocaching! I'm glad to hear that your first foray into the caching world was fun and productive. It may quickly become an obsession but don't hesitate to contact any of us here on the forums or through geocaching.com if you have any questions.

In regards to your above question is this a person or a piece of equipment? Well, it really depends on how you look at it and who's responding! Truthfully though, the Lizard we are referring to is "Lizardo" whom you posed your second question to. You may also come across references to a "Turdle" which is really TurdleEggs. They have somewhat of a bit of a friendly rivalry going but are good friends and the most excellent of caching partners! (if you like getting side-tracked that is ) You'll have to come out to an event and meet them both in person. Our next Pub Nite is coming up in February most likely on February 16. Watch for the event listing on gc.com soon.

Don't hesitate to contact me or any of us if you have questions, or if you want to go out caching with someone. Most of us will choose geocaching over any of that other stuff that happens in our lives (job, family, other hobbies, etc.) so just give us a shout!

Hi Migo, welcome to geocaching. I'm glad to see that one of the first geocaches you found was my "World Peace" one at the Trappist Monestary in St. Norbert. That was the first cache I placed in Winnipeg, and is still my favourite. I love reading logs from people that never knew those ruins existed. Hope to meet you on the trails or at one of the upcoming pub nights.
