Your Caching Name
Permalink Closed

Started a private conversation with Turdleggs asking why they chose that caching name. Now we're curious - why did you choose what you did? Impulse? A private joker?
We came up with ours on our drive home after doing our first cache. The contrast of me, Lorilee, being the only female in the home is obvious to us most of the time - I am badly outnumbered. So they have called me the Queen of the home (like a bee) We tried out the Queen and 4 Princes but it just didn't have that ring to it so...when I said how about a Queen and 4 Jokers they all loved it!! And they play pranks on me a lot. Thus 1Q4J was born. We seldom play cards but the avatars are easy to come up with! To check on each of the boys when we hike we call out...Joker 2? Joker 3? Joker 4? and they reply! My oldest son came home with presents for all of us from a school book fair lately and brought me an eraser that looked like a crown. Being slightly dim that day I asked why and he responded quickly with a grin and a bow - Well you are my Queen aren't you! Share your story with us - if there is one to tell...

My name comes from a character in a campy cult film enjoyed by my friends and me called The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.  Emilio Lizardo (John Lithgow) is the main villain in the film.  My other friends and I have adopted the names of the characters in the movie as our online pseudonyms.  The main good guy in the movie, Buckaroo Banzai (Robocops Peter Weller), is my friend Mike and Karl likes the character name John Manyjars.  I was surprised to find that Buckaroo Banzai was already taken as a username on Geocaching.com.  As is Perfect Tommy and Team Bonzai.  Looks like I am not the only nerd out there.  And for the record, that is John Lithgow, NOT me on my profile page.

I was also wondering what some of the caching names mean... mine doesn't really have any kind of meaning other then I like pink panther and also I love pink so I wanted to have it in my name. Not much of a story there.

I liked 1queenand4jokers ideas on what TurdleEggs might mean (a side hobby? a delicacy you like? do you walk slowly?); I thought my explanation was much less interesting! We've been calling ourselves the Turdles for a while (it’s a combination of my wife’s and my last name) and when I was trying to think up a caching ID the concept of a turtle nest being like a cache popped into my head.

Some of us have absolutely no imagination and therefore no story.

LOL!  Well there's not much of a story to ours either.  My husband's name, my name and our daughter's name begin with a T.  My son's name begins with a G, thus 3T's&aG.  My husband is keen to get that on our licence plate when we get our new car but I digress...

As many of you know, I'm an amateur radio operator (ham) and have been since 1992. My main callsign is VE4MHZ. The VE4 part stands for Manitoba as all hams in Manitoba have VE4 or more recently VA4 as part of thier callsigns. The last 2-3 characters we get to choose as long as it wasn't being used already.

On the radio we need to give our callsigns and it's how we recognise each other easily. If I'm talking to someone who is having trouble remembering my callsign, I'll quite often say "V E 4 Mike Hotel Zulu or just call me MegaHertz". It kind of stuck and so when I needed a userID on geocaching.com, MHz was a natural.

My brother who is not a ham and always has to out do me, naturally had to have THz or TeraHertz as GHz or GigaHertz was taken.

I’ve always had a beard and when they were younger, the kids called me the “Old Billygoat” or “Uncle Harry” from “Harry and the Henderson’s”. I chose “Old Billygoat” for my handle as I’m not as hairy as Harry. I definitely want to hear ertyu’s story.

There really isn't much of a story to mine. One day I was looking for a quick nickname for some online thingy and picked ertyu off the keyboard. Its just stuck since then.

I am involved with Scouts and was a Beaver leader in the 1st Morris Colony. We had a few meetings with a pirate theme and for the last meeting all the kids came dressed as pirates. Well me beeing the leader (and having grown a beard for the winter) I came dressed up as well. They were all to call me Capt' Redbeard for the meeting. One of our games that night involved me barking out orders at my group of pirates ( SWAB THE DECK, WALK THE PLANK, HIT THE BUNK, and so on). The kids and I had made so much noise in the meeting hall my sister ( who was trying to run a Scout meeting ) could hear us. So when I was looking for a user name and asked her for a suggestion her reply was Why not Capt' Redbeard?

So if you run into me this winter you will see why I'm called Capt' Redbeard.

test, test,is this thing on, i can't hear anything, little digger turn up the volume, yes, yes thats better, ok -well as you all know we are pretty friendly with saint nick, at one of our earlier visits ,he was passing around the usual, nice cold coca cola's,my favorite, and who would know better than the jolly man himself, i mentioned to him about a game called geocaching, apparently he has heard about it quite well, so we thought ,why not,but what would we call our selves, white monsters of the north,? no santa had a better idea, the truth , polarbears, but santa also gets a kick out of hiding my cokes, making me dig for them, polarbears it is i say to him,but he hesitated for a second, and suggested ,why not the polarbeardiggers,! well now you know why the man is smart, it was perfect, the polarbeardiggers was it,and around the christmas season you will see us on t.v ,my young cub and i drinking coke up at the north pole.

I decided I did not like being "Mrs. Lizard."  As much as I have taken Lizardo's last name in REAL life, I didn't think that that suited me at all.  Considering that my son is CRAZY into dinosaurs at the moment, I thought that might fit the bill.  After much contemplation I decided that since "saurus" translates to "lizard", maybe we could use the concept as a sort of family name.  So, our kids will be the little lizards, and I (Tannis) will be Tannasaurus.

Why can't I just live vicariously through Lizardo?  I'm just that competitive.

My caching name is just my families first dog's name (Ginny) when we were growing up.  She was a blond cocker spaniel.  I use it for alot of different "names", and I'll respond to it!    212 is just added because it's easy and differentiates from "other" Ginny's out there....

If you look up my name in a "baby-name" book or any kind of what-does-my-name-mean reference guide, it will tell you that Wayne is a name for those in the olden days who mastered the trade of wagonmaking. Thus, "Wayne" means "wagonmaker".

I'd always known this throughout my childhood and didn't like it, because other people had names that meant things like, "God's child", "heavenly star", "divine miracle", "wondrous strength", etc. and I was stuck with "wagonmaker".

This year in university, I mentionned once that my name meant Wagonmaker and it stuck as a nickname. So when I started geocaching in January, this seemed like a logical choice.

So, it literally is the meaning of my actual name. And if you're wondering, I like it better now.

The origins of my nick are terribly obscure, and would be hard to guess.

I got into online communities in the late 80s when I was in high school. Online at that time meant local single line bulletin boards run by hobbyists. If anyone remembers "Adam Selene", that would be me. The first internet connected system I had access to was "System6626", run by Vic Spicer, which required (I *think*) that you use your real name. So I needed a login name.

Now, as I went through school, I managed to share nearly every class I was ever in with at least one (and sometimes two) other Br[iy]ans. This lead to friends (both my own age and adults) and even teachers calling me by my last name, a trend that continues today. And since login ids were (and still are in many places) limited to 8 characters, the vowels got stripped out. "grnbrg" was born.

Since then, I have tended to use that nick wherever I have the option of specifying it. Lately this has become somewhat difficult, as there are are several other grnbrgs out there on the net. I've even found "bgrnbrg" already in use by someone else on the odd site.

grnbrg.
(The original and still best!)

My friends gave me the nick name Grumpy.  I happen to mention it to my Grandmother, and Her response was that  Grandpa was Grumpy, Dad was Grumpy Jr., and therefore I was GrumpyIII.  So it's true folks, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I was handed this nic when in school and it has not only been a badge of honor but depicted my more youthful ways.I had teachers always saying how I was just a slippery devil and was always managing to just avoid the capital punishment of old days (strappings).

But that didn't mean the schools never saved the best for the last...send him home to dad..wow, man that was just plain cruel and unusual punishment.

As I grew older and the days of CB's and amature radio days I was stuck with the name, all my friends came to know me as slippery and well I guess I'm stuck with it. It was that or pop's and somehow that never seemed appropriate here.

Nothing special with our name.  "Dutch" where I was born "53" when I was born.  "BB" is my wife's first two intials.  At the time it was user name to register at geocaching.com.  We might have spent more time thinking about if we knew then what we know now!

I use another name with Agent in it on some other boards, which spun off from some Inspector Gadget jokes.

I figured I'd keep Agent and use MB for Manitoba.

My father's family name being Carriere, and my Christian name Danielle, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Dani. So, I called myself Dani, and came to be called Dani_Carriere.

(Big shiny quarter to the person who can tell me the origins of this paragraph!).

Ya gotta love the innerweb....

"My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip."

Charles Dickens, Great Expectations, Chapter 1, Paragraph 1.

Ok I take you way back in the world of cyber space, before the internet was functional and into the life of Bulletin Board operators....  I was co sysop of of one of the larger BB's in Winnipeg at that time and  needed a handle.  NOT being extremely creative I used Ztirnats as a variation of my name,  Since that day Z'tirnats has been (in online gaming)  a very nasty gnome, a Mon Calamari Merchant and flew as an online pilot both in WW1 and as a bomber pilot in WW2  (Z for Zombie, a very famous Canadian Lancaster was my chariot).  Z'ad came about as the Z had to stay and is a very famous entertainer on 7 star systems in the online world.  (originally wanted Zed for the Canadian roots but it was already taken by someone who was a  fan of Men in Black)

We just started geocaching and we found out about it after a quick search on google for GPS games  (had a gps unit but really didn't know what to do with it, maps in Winnipeg are rather useless)  When geocaching was discovered Z and Z fell in love with the concept and the community that supports it.  A new set of geocachers was born!

I am guessing that everyone knows what a jpeg is, well that is not what I had in mind when I came up with this name many years ago. The name comes from the first part of my name, Jayson, and the last part of this wonderful city I have resided in for more than 30 years. That is how JayPeg came to be.

But recently people have started call me something else and it does not seem to be going away. Thanks Turdle No more details required.

Started flyfishing about 5 years ago and recently (like last week) discovered Geocaching.  Was looking for a nick and figured since I tied flies I could be flyguy ... it was taken on the main Geo boards so I added my birth year and voila flyguy75 was born.  Also now that I have it I have some good ideas for making wooden tokens for leaving. (if I ever find a cache that is hehe)

A long while, I used to post on the intarweb under the handle of The_High_Desert, which came from my love of staying up late and listening to Art Bell (From the high desert and the great American southwest) and not from some drug laced cactus (as many people thought). After deciding that it was just too much of a pain to always type that in, I started to look for something different and found etamin, a variant on the name of a star making up the right eye of the constellation of Draco the Dragon. I debated choosing his left eye, Rastabon, but decided that I just wasn't funky enough to pull it off.

I figured Jim and Jimbo were already taken, so I just tried "Jimbo 2", and it worked. It's very likely there is already a Jim on Geocaching.com.
