Holy Smoke! 300 new caches in 5 hours! I better pack an extra pair of shoes for when the soles melt off of the first ones.

This is a good idea, even on a smaller scale. Like not having to worry about coordinating with the approver. I like the idea of dividing the city and surrounding area and then meeting for breakfast to divide up the areas. We could do the same in the various parks and around Steinbach, Morris, or wherever. Could work...

Count me in to participate! Tannasaurus and I have been working on some new caches this winter that we hope to have active shortly. The more the merrier!

The Vancouver Island GPS users are having their second annual Hide-and-Go-Cache day on February 25th. Last year they put out 49 caches. They’re having a Hide-and-Go Cache Bash on March 11 to give out prizes for the most hides, FTF’s, etc.

"If you absolutely can't get out on Saturday February 25th, you can hide your cache(s) ahead of time. When you post your cache please add a note to the Approver, stating that your cache is part of the Vancouver Island Hide-And-Go Cache Event and is to be approved with the other event caches on Saturday February 25th.

Keep the cache placement rules in mind when hiding your cache. Read the geocaching.com guidelines (http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx), and remember that your cache must be at least 161 meters from another cache. When submitting a multi or puzzle cache, include the intermediate steps in a note to the approver to speed up the approval process.

As you submit your caches, please post a note in the vigps.com forums to indicate the name of the cache and the cache listing site on which it appears. On the cache page, please state that this cache was hidden as part of the 2nd Annual Vancouver Island Hide-&-Go Cache."

I'd love to start a competition for hiding caches with Saskatchewan cachers too. We've hidden several in that province and they could use motivation I'm sure! I like the idea of limiting each team to one micro as well. I'd rather not award trophies for highest number of caches hidden since sometimes one well thought out puzzle or multi or an amazing view can be just as wonderful as number but mentioning stats is always interesting. I think quality and quantity always needs balance. I think the goal of every MBGA member hiding at least one during a given time frame would be great! I do respect that there are those not interested in hiding and the upkeep of a cache though. Keep providing links to various events if you find them listed. We may as well piggyback off of experience.

I throw this out for discussion. Feel free to comment of what you think might or might not work here in Manitoba:

Cache Prep:

• Hide caches ahead of time – province wide
• List cache with note for cache approver that this is part of the Manitoba cache release event
• List the name and waypoint on the MBGA forum (so it can be added to the cache list web page)

Basic hide rules:

• No micros in the bush – only camouflaged containers in high traffic, urban settings
• Max one micro per hider
• Follow cache placement rules
• Keep in mind, there’s a possibility that caches may be placed too close togther and the cache approver will only approve the first one - the second cache will have to be moved. This includes intermediate points in a micro.

Lizardo's ideas of meeting ahead of time and dividing up the land sounds like a good way to distribute the caches and avoid proximity problems.

Develop web page to publish cache lists and find stats

Cache Release:

• Negotiate with GC cache volunteer to publish caches on a certain date
• Book mark list to identify all caches hidden as part of the event

Awards Event:

Give cache weights: 1 for micros, 2 for larger sizes, 3 for camouflaged hides in a public setting, 4 for puzzles – you get the idea

Only cachers who placed caches are eligible for most FTF prize

Possible Awards:

• People’s choice awards (best hide, best container, best location, etc.)
• Most hide points
• Most find points
• Most FTF’s

Last year the Vancouver Island cachers put out 49 caches (their first event of this type); this year 74. I think we’d be pretty happy to see 49 new caches come out!

We can challenge Saskatchewan to try and beat our numbers.

How about "No 'traditional' Micros."? If you need a micro as a stage in a multi, perhaps, but traditional caches should be 'small' or larger.

Of course, that's just my bias.

So, Brian, be honest. How do you REALLY feel about micros?

How about encouraging quality hides over quantity by, and I use the word loosely, limiting the number of caches per user to 5 (or whatever) for the sake of the event? Just like fishing derby rules. You weigh your best x number of fish.

I realize that this would not net the largest number of new caches, but I for one enjoy the caches that have had some thought put into them. I'm pretty sure that Peter is already researching Aramaic and three dimensional math problems to place his next puzzle cache.

From a file I stole from Peter's hard drive:

"Coordinates for stage three can be deciphered by constructing a working particle accelerator from pieces left over from the Jacob's Ladder you built to solve stage one..."

We plan to place more caches that require hiking and outdooor travel this summer. More in the Grand Beach area, more in the Whiteshell and some in the Pinawa and Lac Du Bonnet areas.

I think when there more caches in specific areas it makes a road trip much more practical.

As much as I like micros in the winter and because they are usually close to home there is nothing better than hiking through the bush for an hour and finding a big ole ammo box hidden.

Just my 2 cents.

A concerned thought came to Joker 1 and I regarding a one day release for cache hides and then a heavy duty FTF race...What will the longevity of those caches be with a trail well worn in one weekend - have any cachers in these places reported any problems? Currently with 3-4 trying for FTF's it isn't too bad but with 30 teams it could get tough - especially urban hides. At the Poker derby most cachers were ever so obvious but of course none of those hides remained in place.

3T's&aG and our team are planning to host this event and we will study and sort through the ideas and let you know what the plan is. The event will take place in spring- hopefully after the rain and before the mosquitoes.

I'm not sure limiting the number of hides is the best idea. I think the whole point of an event like this is to promote the placement of a large(ish) number of quality caches. A film canister hung in a random pine tree just doesn't rock my world.

Perhaps rather than a rule specifying sizes or types of caches, a preamble emphasizing that hides should be interesting or entertaining to the finder, either through back story, location or clever hiding.

I realize that this would not net the largest number of new caches, but I for one enjoy the caches that have had some thought put into them.

Me too.

I think a good rule of thumb is that a cache should take at least as long to set up and hide as it does to find. But that's just me.

Tobey, Paula and I are tentatively planning this event for end of May - beginning of June. We will update as we have more information after Spring Break.
