I would also suggest finding several caches of differing types before hiding one to get a feel for what works, whats good, whats fun, etc.

Some things to consider are the container, the larger the better, ammo cans or lock n lock work best. The location, safe and interesting and that it is permissible to place a cache there. The hide, permanance, durability, does it need leaves or sticks to hide (is there always going to enough available), will it be hidden in all four seasons, are there lots of people milling around that might find it. In Manitoba we especially have to consider hides in the flood plain. Make sure to be aware of geocaching rules about proximity, railways and private property. For the contents, typically several dollar store items ranging from kids toys to useful items. A logbook, pencil/pens, sharpener, ziplocks and a Geocaching.com stash note.

Hey there Blacksmith. I'm a 40 year old newbie with two girls (6 and 11) so I hear you loud and clear. I got a GPSr about a month ago and we're having a grand old time geocaching.

ERTYU, where would we find out about things like railroad tracks? My daughters and I are planning our first hides as well. We wouldn't want to put things where we shouldn't.

The links I posted have the details. For railways you need to be at least 150ft away for safety. Typically land in that area is owned by the railway anyway.

Oh, OK, I knew that then. I misinterpreted your post to mean that there were conditions around railroad tracks that were specific to Manitoba.

Welcome to great and crazy hobby/sport of ours. Our kids are all on their own (three out of four have tried it). So we are waiting for the grand kids to get just a little bit bigger and then we will take them out on the "treasure hunt"
