Hi there. We're new to this sport and just wanted to say hi. I'm 42 and my son is 6. We found our first Geocache this morning and it was a lot of fun for him (and for me too!). We were thinking of starting our own Geocache. Does anyone have any reccomendations as to what to put inside? I was thinking a few things for kids, logbook, pen and pencil and, some other tid bits.
Welcome! Its great that you've discovered a great new hobby.
Here are some guides about hiding: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx http://www.geocaching.com/about/hiding.aspx http://www.geocaching.com/faq/
I would also suggest finding several caches of differing types before hiding one to get a feel for what works, whats good, whats fun, etc.
Some things to consider are the container, the larger the better, ammo cans or lock n lock work best. The location, safe and interesting and that it is permissible to place a cache there. The hide, permanance, durability, does it need leaves or sticks to hide (is there always going to enough available), will it be hidden in all four seasons, are there lots of people milling around that might find it. In Manitoba we especially have to consider hides in the flood plain. Make sure to be aware of geocaching rules about proximity, railways and private property. For the contents, typically several dollar store items ranging from kids toys to useful items. A logbook, pencil/pens, sharpener, ziplocks and a Geocaching.com stash note.
Again, welcome, its always nice to have new people finding and hiding caches.
Hey there Blacksmith. I'm a 40 year old newbie with two girls (6 and 11) so I hear you loud and clear. I got a GPSr about a month ago and we're having a grand old time geocaching.
ERTYU, where would we find out about things like railroad tracks? My daughters and I are planning our first hides as well. We wouldn't want to put things where we shouldn't.
The links I posted have the details. For railways you need to be at least 150ft away for safety. Typically land in that area is owned by the railway anyway.
I too want to share a warm welcome to you and your family to this great activity we call mayham...no I mean geocaching..
Sheese another city guy who already is planning on surpassing the slippery_1....jokes.
Glad you found your way here, how to meet you some day and hope you find lots and lots of great caches...
One experience I have found here, is there are never any dumb questions here, and if you want to know just ask....someone will always answer you. Carry on Caching.
Welcome to great and crazy hobby/sport of ours. Our kids are all on their own (three out of four have tried it). So we are waiting for the grand kids to get just a little bit bigger and then we will take them out on the "treasure hunt" Enjoy the hunt with the kids and we hope to meet you soon
Interested in some caching tips? Check out the MBGA Safety Tips course being held Dec 2 @ The Garden city Inn and Dec 3 @ Birdshill park. This will be a great chance to meet some veteran cachers as well.
